The modern art collection at the National Gallery is located in a 1920s palace that was built as one of the first functionalist buildings in Europe. The goal of this guided tour is to introduce you to works that are considered the most renowned or interesting, as well as those close to the heart of each lecturer. The collection covers a wide range, spread over several decades since the turn of the 19th and 20th century – we will enjoy works representing Art Nouveau (Secession), Symbolism, Art Deco and Cubism, as well as Surrealism. Special space is dedicated to paintings by František Kupka, one of the founders of abstract painting, whose works burst with energy. We will enjoy the poetic artificialist style, and its unusual female creator, Toyen, as well as notable solitaire-type works by Jan Zrzavý, František Bílek, and Josef Šíma.
