The Medieval art in the National Gallery experience is intensified by its location in this Medieval convent from the 13th century. Surprisingly, this is one of the best exhibitions of its kind worldwide, with the only comparable exhibition being in Italy.
We will first briefly discuss the context of the era as well as the style of painting at that time, then focusing on the individual artworks – often truly exceptional. Aside from Italy, it was Bohemia where the largest number of panel-paintings survived, so there is much to choose from.
We will see the works of Theodoric of Prague, also known as Master Theodoric, the court painter to Emperor Charles IV. To a certain degree, he’s one-of-a-kind and his works never cease to amaze us, even after six centuries. We will also see two notable series of panel-paintings, including one from the Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece that presents the so called ‘court style’ in our context referred to as ‘beautiful style’ – and it certainly stands up to its name. At the time, the paintings and sculptures created within the territory of the Czech Kingdom were known across Europe as Ymago di Praga, a renowned brand of quality. Finally, we will briefly discuss how the Hussite reformation and the onset of Renaissance reflected in art.
If you are a fan of Medieval art, we also have a specialty for you – the Karlštejn Castle Tour with its particular focus on art.
